King vs. California King: Which is Right for You?

When looking for a new mattress, there are a few sizes to choose from. Healthy Bedroom has both king and California king-size mattresses. While they are both large enough for two people, there are a few differences between them. Here are a few of the features to look at when deciding which one you'd like:

Length

The length is one of the most significant differences between a California king and a standard king-size mattress. While kings are eighty inches long, the California king is eighty-four inches. This makes it easier for anyone over 6 feet to fit comfortably on the mattress without their feet going over the end of the bed. The king is eighty inches, which is not as ideal for taller people. If you have animals that like to sleep at the end of your bed, the extra four inches provide them space to sleep. We can help you find the right bed length for your situation from our selection of mattresses.

Width

While the California king is better for taller people, they are sometimes narrower than the king by a few inches. If you need the extra space width-wise, you may want to choose the king. Finding a bedframe that will fit the large width is also a determining factor when choosing a mattress size.

Make of the Bed

If you want a bed with a split option so you can recline the bed on each side, a king-sized mattress is the better choice. There are more brands available for split kings, and the cost can be lower as well. If you want a standard mattress without adjustable features, either size can work, depending on your preferences.

Size of the Bedroom

The dimensions of your bedroom will help you determine the size of bed you will need. If the room is long and narrow, the California king is a better fit. In a room that is more square but smaller in size, the king may be the better option. Take measurements of your room before coming in so we can help you decide which bed works for your space. You may want to use a room that is bigger than twelve by twelve feet for a king-sized bed or thirteen by eleven feet for a California king-sized mattress.

Sleeping Position

Your preferred sleeping position can make a difference in what bed you'll need. If you're taller than six feet and sleep on your side, you can still fit on a king-size bed. Sleeping on your back or stomach means you may want a longer mattress so you can fit more comfortably. If you and your partner are both back or stomach sleepers, you'll want to have the wider space of a king to fit comfortably.
