To Flip or Not to Flip?

Most mattresses in Canada use a combination of foams or are made entirely of foam. During sleep the average person loses approximately 1 cup of moisture per night. A foam mattress absorbs and holds that moisture allowing mold and mildew to quickly build up. Mattresses made with natural fibres have superior wicking properties, pulling the moisture away from your body, moving it to the air which reduces the growth of mold, mildew and mites.

Many memory foam mattresses contain harmful, toxic chemicals. Foams break down and give off a gas which can affect the breathing of sensitive individuals. Mattresses made with natural materials do not have this problem.

Stay Cool

Memory foam mattresses tend to retain heat and can cause body temperatures to rise to uncomfortable levels.

Natural materials, especially wool, cotton, and horse hair, are amazing temperature regulators. Natural fibres trap dead air. Dead air is a fantastic insulator and provides a great buffer against the cold. Natural fibres also have great cooling properties. As your body warms up, moisture within the fibre will evaporate, cooling the air between you and your mattress.

During the night, your body uses thermoregulation to keep your core temperature in a healthy range. The sensations that come with this natural process can make it hard to sleep peacefully.

Your preferred sleeping position is a major factor in finding the right mattress for you. Stomach sleepers require a high level of support, side sleepers require less, and back sleepers fall somewhere in the middle.

Studies have also shown that gender-based anatomical differences can require different levels of support. Men with pronounced shoulders and women with pronounced hips require higher point elasticity in order to achieve spinal alignment.

Proper spinal alignment, particularly for side and stomach sleepers, can promote up to 49% more time in REM compared to sleeping with a misaligned or curved spine.

It is not uncommon for a particular mattress to not match up exactly to a size listed above. As many aspects of building a mattress are done by hand, there will always be variations in sizing from one mattress to the next.

Often times, mattresses may measure as much as one or two inches shorter or narrower than the "official" dimensions. This is considered normal.
